Windows NT Print Server FAQs
Question:
Do Monarch Marking Systems Print Servers support Windows NT?
Answer:
Any Monarch print server that supports the TCP/IP protocol will support Windows NT version 3.51 or greater as long as the TCP/IP stack is loaded on the server and lpr/lpd or ftp printing is being used.

Question:
How can I tell if the TCP/IP protocol stack is loaded on my NT server?
Answer:
- Go to Control Panel/Network/Protocols/Add.
- In Select Network Protocol, choose TCP/IP Protocol.
- Within the Network Services window, verify that both Microsoft TCP/IP Printing and Simple TCP/IP Services are listed.
- If one or both are not listed, click Add and install both options.

Question:
Why am I unable to assign an IP address using gleaning?
Answer:
Gleaning is not supported with Windows NT version 3.5. If you are using this version, use an alternative method of assigning an IP address. (i.e. route add command).
Answer:
If you are using Windows NT version 3.51 or NT version 4.0, the Microsoft TCP/IP-32 ARP table will not accept a new ARP entry if its ARP table is currently empty (you can check this by typing ARP -a). If this is the case, do the following:
- Ping the IP address of a known host
- Add the print server entry into ARP table. Ex: arp -s
(Note: NT requires you to use hyphens instead of colons in the Ethernet address).
- Power cycle the print server.
- Start a continuous ping. Ex: ping -t IP address
- Telnet to the print server and set permanent IP address.

Question:
How do I create an LPD printer?
Answer:
- Go to Start/Settings/Printer/Add Printer and Select My Computer when prompted.
- In the Add Printer Wizard, click on Add Port.
- From the list of available ports select LPR Port.
- In Add LPR Compatible Printer, enter the IP Address you assigned the print server in the Name or address of server providing lpd field.
- In Name of printer on that machine: enter a name for the queue followed by the appropriate output port number. Ex: QUEUE1

Question:
When I send text jobs to your print server the print job comes out staggered or the last page won't print out. Why?
Answer:
This is common with text print jobs because they are sent to the printer without any additional formatting. The solution is to add an LF, FF, or NF filter before the output port number in the Name of printer on that machine field.
- FF appends a form feed to the end of a print job.
- LF appends a form feed to the end of a print job and also adds a carriage return after every line-feed.
- NF inserts a carriage return, but no form feed.
Ex: The printer name QUEUELF1 will send formatted print jobs to output port 1 on the print server.

Question:
How do I set up a Windows For Workgroups client to print through my Windows NT server?
Answer:
- Create the LPD printer on the NT server.
- Specify the printer is a "shared" device.
- Verify the user login and password on the NT server are exactly the same as the user has on their Windows for Workgroups machine.
- Disable the Fast Printing Direct to Port option on the client.
- Now the printer should show up as a network printer on the client.

Question:
The network administrator can send LPR print jobs, but other users get errors when they try to send jobs from their workstations. How can I solve this problem?
Answer:
Giving full permissions to just the shared printer is not adequate for network printing with Windows NT 3.51. The solution is to give non-administrator users read and write permissions to SYSTEM32 directories. After changing the permissions, reboot the Windows NT server.

Question:
When I try to run the MonarchNet for TCP/IP utility from Windows NT, I get the error "WS10048, IP5014 Cannot bind socket".
Answer:
This error occurs because Windows NT uses the same UDP Port to which MonarchNet for TCP/IP defaults. To correct this problem, go to File/Special Options. Change the UDP Port to something other than 9, such as 4201.

Question:
When I try to run the bootp server from within MonarchNet for TCP/IP, I get the error "WS10048, IP5014 Cannot bind socket".
Answer:
Go into Network Setup on the server and disable DHCP support, then run the bootp server.

TCP/IP Print Server FAQs
Question:
How do I set up an Monarch Marking Systems printer in Windows 2000?
Answer :
- Select Add printer
- Choose local printer (disable auto detect my printer)
- Create a new port (choose type and select "standard TCP/IP").
- From the New wizard enter Print server IP address and a port name
- Depending on the print server type, choose the appropriate port from the drop-down menu
- The last page in the wizard is conformation of the adapter type. The final step prompts for a printer driver.
Question:
How do I assign an IP address to my print server?
Answer
: Using factory default settings, the print
server first attempts to determine its IP address using DHCP, RARP, BOOTP
or Gleaning. If the print server has not resolved its IP address within
two minutes of power up, it defaults to 198.102.102.254. (This address should
only be used temporarily.) You can use one of three methods to assign the
unit an IP address once it has defaulted.
MonarchNet FOR TCP/IP
- Start the utility and double click on the device you are trying to
configure.
- You will then be prompted to fill in the IP address you are trying
to assign.
STATIC ROUTE ENTRY
- After the two minute broadcast period you can use the "route add"
command to place the default IP address into the workstation's network
routing table. The syntax for this command is:
route add 198.102.102.254 "IP address of the workstation" 0
Note: The zero (0) placed at the end of the "route add" command is optional
on some systems.
- Next, telnet to the default IP address and configure the unit.
GLEANING
- Add an entry to the ARP table that assigns an IP address to an Ethernet
(Hardware) address. The syntax for this command is:
arp -s "ip_address" "Ethernet_address" temp
- Next, power cycle the print server and start a continuous ping to
the IP address used in the arp command. This will assign the print server
a temporary IP address. To finish setting up the unit, telnet to the
new IP address.

Question:
When I send text jobs to your print server the print job comes out staggered
or the last page won't print out. Why?
Answer
: The print job being sent was not formatted.
The solution is to add an LF, FF, or NF before the output port number in
the remote printer entry.Ex:QUEUELF3
- FF appends a form feed to the end of a print job.
- LF appends a form feed to the end of a print job as well as adding
carriage return after every line-feed.
- NF inserts a carriage return, but no form feed.

Question:
Can I print to a TCP/IP print server from a Windows machine?
Answer:
Yes. Monarch Marking Systems TCP/IP print servers support LPR, FTP, and Raw Port
printing. Windows NT clients have an integrated LPR spooler that is compatible
with all Monarch TCP/IP print servers. Windows 95 clients do
not have direct TCP/IP printing capability integrated into Windows. Which can be downloaded free from our web site. This software will give Windows 95
client the ability to print directly to an Monarch print server
over TCP/IP by using the raw port printing method. You can also order a compact disk
with the software by ordering part number TC9840ENAD.
For Windows 3.1x clients, there are many third-party Windows LPR spoolers
available. Please contact these vendors for more details.
